Q: What is Stitch Red?

A:  Stitch Red is an industry-wide campaign to raise awareness of heart disease. Our goal is to bring awareness about this deadly disease to women worldwide so we can help women recognize and reduce their risk factors.

Jimmy Beans Wool has partnered with The Heart Truth® and vendors from across the industry to raise awareness. We will be promoting the Stitch Red campaign at various trade shows throughout 2012/2013. Take a look at our events schedule to see the specifics.
 
 
Q: Is Stitch Red a non-profit organization (501c3)?
A: No. Stitch Red is not a non-profit organization. We do not fund research or directly collect donations. Stitch Red is an awareness campaign, with a goal of helping woman learn about the dangers of heart disease. All funds raised will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) in support of The Heart Truth®.
 
 
Q: How did Stitch Red start?
A:   The idea for Stitch Red was originally a collaboration between Marta McGinnis and Laura Zander, owner of Jimmy Beans Wool, that all started with a friendly conversation over lattes in early 2008. Marta had recently survived a major heart attack and Laura's husband Doug, an active, fit 30-something had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure. The idea started out small, with Laura and Marta wanting to put together a book of red garments with the profits of the book going to heart disease research. Sadly, Marta passed away in 2008 before they were able to truly get started with Stitch Red. Laura is forever grateful for Marta's vision and mentorship and decided in late 2010 that it was time to carry out the idea that she and Marta had developed to help make sure more women were made aware of this deadly, quiet disease.
 
 
Q: Who is in charge of Stitch Red?
A: Stitch Red was started by Jimmy Beans Wool, but has quickly been adopted and brought to life by the entire industry from manufacturers, distributors and retail stores alike.
 
 
Q: What is the The Heart Truth®?
A:  The Heart Truth® is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Through the campaign, the NHLBI leads the nation in a landmark heart health awareness movement that is being embraced by millions who share the common goal of better heart health for all women.
 
 
Q: Can I donate directly to The Heart Truth®?
A: No, as a government campaign, The Heart Truth® cannot accept donations. You can send proceeds to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) in support of The Heart Truth®
 
 
Q: Where can I buy Stitch Red products?
A: You can buy Stitch Red products at Jimmy Beans Wool or at participating yarn shops (or retail stores).
 
 
Q: Who are the vendors involved in Stitch Red? What are they doing?
A:  You can check out all of the participating vendors on our Stitch Red partners page.

All vendors are donating 5% of gross profits of each sale of their Stitch Red product(s) directly to FNIH.
 
 
Q: Are there ways my local yarn shop can get involved?
A:  We are encouraging all local retail stores to join in for one or all of our ”Stitch Red Knit Nights”, which will be the 1st Tuesday of each month starting February 7th, 2012. Local retail stores can participate by designating the knit night as such and donating 5% of their gross profits from the night directly to FNIH.

Also, you can ask your local yarn shops to stock Stitch Red products.
